You May Not Want It But You Need It!
Most people spend more time planning for their summer vacation than they do planning their estate. Some people may plan up to a year ahead or more for a vacation, spending thousands of dollars, especially if it involves a cruise or overseas travel. One family in a noted travel magazine has their vacations planned from now thru 2015.
Of course, everyone has their individual priorities, and vacations are often fairly high on the list. Let’s face it; we all could use a well deserved vacation every now and then.
However, as important as fun and relaxation are, they are really “wants” and not “needs”; similar to that new sports car or big screen TV. In fact, it could be argued that you will have a much more pleasant vacation once you have planned for and taken care of your estate (especially if you are planning on traveling without the kids this summer).
Estate planning is a critical need for everyone, and it is best taken care of as soon as possible. As we have each experienced at some point in each of our lives, life is unpredictable. The one certainty we each share is death (and taxes but that is better left for another post!). Estate planning not only affects your personal belongings and assets, but it impacts all of those who are left behind. Proper estate planning ensures your legacy and the well-being of your loved ones.
There is no such thing as a “simple Will”, and it is always recommended that a qualified estate planning attorney guide you through the process. Spouses, children, extended family, and pets may all need to be considered, along with different types of Wills and Trusts. Once you have planned for your future and beyond, you can relax and enjoy many summer vacations to come!
